ASL Heretic     ASL Reading List

(And some general military history thrown in for good measure!)

Here is a list of reference materials for ASL (Advanced Squad Leader) players and scenario designers (plus any other military enthusiasts).  If I couldn't find it on Amazon, I'd try ABE (Advanced Book Exchange) an online collection of various used book dealers.
Individual links take you toIn Association with Amazon.com (if available).

First off, you should all be on gamesquad.com on the ASL forums.

Ballantine Illustrated History of the Violent Century Series
This is a series of paperbacks that came out in the 70's dealing with all aspects of 20th Century conflict.  They have quite a bit of information for their size and are written by a number of "big name" military writers.  They are very collectible and can really only be found in used book stores and on Ebay.

AFV G2 magazine
A 1970's armor magazine with an emphasis on stuff for modelers, but lots of info on armor related stuff.  Mostly overviews, but interesting, nonetheless.  This list may help you if you are looking to Ebay an issue or two.

New Stuff

Death of the Leaping Horseman by Jason D Mark
A day by day account of the fighting in Stalingrad by the 24th Panzer Div.  Gives some incredible detail of the combat operations but is slightly marred by the authors inclusion of trivial details that detract from the narrative.

Island of Fire: Battle for the Barrikady Gun Factory in Stalingrad by Jason D Mark
I've read it and liked it a lot. It has a different way of telling the history. The author doesn't tell the story in a narrative way but rather tells what the different sources say of what happened that particular day. This I find refreshing but I know others that don't like that kind of writing. It's based on log books, diaries, letters home and interviews. There are also a lot of interesting photographs and a map over the Island of fire area with all the factories and buildings. It is great to compare to the Red Barricades map.  I highly recommend it.
Says Jorgen Holm from the ASL forum.

A must read on leadership in WWII and some good vinettes, esp. on the Hurtgen and the Bulge, but especially like the last part where he and a few men from his Company capture Leipzeig. (MacDonald went on to be a contributing editor to the US Army's official WW-II history series).

 Battle of the Bulge

Bastogne by Guy Franz Arend
This is a day-by-day, hour-by-hour account of the battle of Bastogne.  It has a considerable amount of detail (though some of the captions are obviously wrong), and a lot of one-of-a-kind photos I've never seen before.  Oddly, it was printed for the Bastogne Historical Center in Belgium in 1987.  It is a hard back and is 335 pages long  (I'm only giving all this detail because I've never seen or heard of this book before).

Hitler's Last Gamble - Battle of the Bulge December 1944-January 1945 by Trevor N Dupuy

The Devil's Adjutant, by Michael Reynolds
This book seems almost purpose-written for the ASL KGP enthusiast; with pertinent, detailed discussions covering KGP from start to end. Detailed discussion of the actions at Stoumont, Cheneux, and La Gleize, as well as other nearby towns/villages. The maps are excellent. Brief Malmady discussion. Detailed OOBs, ETC, right down to the eventual "walk- out" from La Gleize.

Campaigns in Sicily and Italy

Home Was Never Like This by Col Doyle Yardley
Written from the personal diaries -1942-1945 - of Col. Doyle Yardley, Commander of America's first Combat Paratrooper Unit, the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion.

He details the formation, training and deployment of the 509th in England, North Africa and Southern Italy. Col. Yardley was wounded in Southern Italy and taken prisoner by the German Army. He spent 17 months as a POW at Oflag 64, Schubin, Poland . The diaries mention hundreds of fellow soldiers and is fully indexed.

His WWII American perspective reveals a heart-wrenching and often humorous look into his life and the lives of hundreds of others involved in or affected by the war.

We Jumped to Fight
by Edson Duncan Raff
Raff was an officer in the US Army and author of a book on paratroopers. He served as Commanding Officer of one of the first American paratroop units to jump into combat, the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion, during Operation Torch. His book was based on his experience in that operation and was published in 1944.

He spent time as an airborne planner on General Omar Bradley's staff and was assigned by General Matthew Ridgway to command the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment's armored sea-landing troops on D-Day. Due to casualties, he was transferred shortly thereafter (15 June 1944) to command the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Raff led that Regiment through the rest of the war, including its participation in Operation Varsity.

After the war in 1954, Raff would command the 77th Special Forces Group, based at Fort Bragg and is credited by Lieutenant General William Yarborough as the "father" of the then-controversial green beret now routinely worn by US Army Special Forces.

Desert War

Alamein by Jon Latimer
This is a great book, giving a large amount of detail on both the battle itself as well as the upper echelon machinations and the attempts to get supplies to both armies  Latimer's writing style is fairly fluid and quite engaging.

Rommel's Funnies by Thomas Jentz
This is a slim (32 page) booklet from Darlington Press that describes several unusual vehicles that were used in North Africa.  The vehicles covered are the PzSflII (a 75mm L41 mounted in a turret on a weird halftrack), the 76.2mm FK (r) (a Russian 76.2mm AT gun mounted on a SdKfz in a big-assed armored box), the SiG 33 (a 150mm infantry gun mounted in an open-topped tank chassis), the Lorraine-Schlepper SPG (a 150mm howitzer on a French carrier chassis; typical SPG), and the Landwasserschlepper (a big amphibious tractor that was going to be used to deposit Italian Marines behind British lines during Operation Venezia in May 42...sounds like a fun "what-if" scenario).  This might be out of print, I see a pic of it on Darlington's site, but no price or description.

More technical info than combat descriptions.

Soviet Tanks & Combat Vehicles of WWII by Steven Zaloga & James Gransen
Comprehensive and well written source for Soviet AFV's during WWII.  Zaloga is probably the most readable of all the armor historians.

M4 Sherman by Michael Green
A more accessible history of the Sherman.  Not as extensive as Hunnicutt's book, but it doesn't cost $120 on Ebay either.

Tiger Tanks by Michael Green
Less technical and more accessible than Jentz.

Steel Fortress, The Russian T-28 Medium Tank by Mikhail Baryatinsky & Jim Kinnear
The ultimate resource for the T-28 with tons of photos.

U.S. Military Tracked Vehicles by Fred Crismon
Photos and brief descriptions of every US tracked vehicle including experimental and prototypes from pre-WWI to the present.

Škoda LT vz 35 by Vladimír Francev & Charles Kliment
Interesting monograph on the Czech LT vz 35.  Lots of illustrations Text is in Czech and English.

Panzerkampwagen Maus by Thomas Jentz
Cool monograph on the ultimate German wet-dream tank.
