Disclaimer: I totally stole the physical layout of the world and the distribution of the major monster types from the boardgame Titan published by the Avalon Hill Game Company. If you have played the game you will see what I swiped, and if you have not played it you need not worry since it will never be referred to again. All the cultural and historical stuff are my own creative efforts.
Titania is a fairly "low" fantasy world, meaning that there is little showy magic and characters are unlikely to perform earth-shaking feats. That is not to say that the world is mundane, it isn't. There are monsters and magic aplenty, they are also very deadly. Titania is a completely magical world, it is not a sphere orbiting a star, rather it is a slightly curved series of magically connected planes. Each of the planes is linked to several adjacent planes and separated by what is known as the Veil. The Veil is a magical barrier that resembles a thick fog bank that will magically confound most attempts to traverse it. Travel through the Veil is possible either with the aid of magic or possibly by accident. Flying creatures will find that the Veil causes difficulties with staying aloft, birds that come too close can be seen to fall to the ground as if they became disoriented. Weather seems to pass through the Veil with no problem.
So far I have only worked up the details of one of the nine major culture hearths (six are city builders and three are nomadic). The culture that I have finished is in the land called Ir Patria (the land of the father). The language is based on Italian, but the culture is not (at least not beyond the language part of the culture). I simply wanted to create a language for the Patrians to speak and was not up to the challenge of creating one from complete scratch. So I created a table of phonetic shifts and used Italian as my base...so there, I suck, sue me. The "Flying Merchants" that have introduced the composite bow are based loosely on the medieval Japanese. The horse nomads, the "Teyeteye" who migrated into Ir Patria 1800 years ago were loosely based on the Cheyenne. They are physically gone from Ir Patria now, but they still inhabit several other "planes". So anyways, onto the game stuff...
