Ragenegre is the capitol of the kingdom that bears the same name. The city itself was originally founded as an outpost and trading center for Imperial dealings with the Rupeyi and Kikogneyi tribes. The original settlement was a simple wooden palisade and several wood frame and reed thatched barracks and warehouses. It was soon discovered that there was plentiful granite in the hills to the south that could be used for building, and soon a stone wall had been erected around the original buildings. To reduce expenses the garrison commander started planting crops and it was found that the soil was exceptionally fertile. Unfortunately this was found to be a result of the periodic flooding by the lake's silty waters.
The port of Ragenegre today is a bustling commercial center. The king, who also functions as the Duke of Ragenegre, administers the city. The Kingdom of Ragenegre is made up of five duchies, Ragenegre, Cita ther Fiume, Neviolina, Verona Acere and Yirveyetre. The Duchy of Ragenegre is by far the largest of the five with a population of over 18,000 people. Neviolina, the next largest has just over 6,500 people. The dukes all owe fealty to the king and in turn have fealty sworn to them by the barons of the surrounding towns. An appointed mayor, who is often a local landholder or merchant, usually administers villages and hamlets.
King Reo IX of Ragenegre is the current occupant of the throne. He is much more concerned with his farmlands than he is with administering the kingdom. He became king after his older brother, Rojia XII, was killed by his wife's lover six years ago. Reo IX has always loved to work with the land and took an active interest in the day-to-day running of his farms. Now that he is king, he often seems distracted, as if he wishes that he did not have to deal with being king. He is sensible and can make intelligent decisions when he puts his mind to it, but politics do not appeal to him. Because of this problem, his subordinates have taken to making decisions for him when he seems preoccupied. He owns several villages and many hamlets, in addition to being the Duke of Ragenegre. He has doubled the amount of lakefront that is protected by dikes and flood control channels.
Duke Muddybreeches of Neviolina is a proud and honest man. He got his name when as a young man he led rescue efforts to save victims of a dike collapse. He personally waded through waist deep mud and water to help pull people to safety. This action has had a lasting impression on the populace of Neviolina, who love their Duke. He is a big, strong, outspoken man who has tried to live up to the adoration that his people show for him. He has been a strong supporter of the effort to protect the lakefront with dikes and flood control channels. He has a reputation for being fair and just in his judicial rulings. He takes his position very seriously and does his best to carry out his duties in an honorable fashion. He owns an imported maned lion that was purchased from the Flying Merchants as a cub. The lion, named Fuoke, is extremely large (compared to Ir Patrian lions) and very intelligent, and quite devoted to the Duke.
Duke Rojia XXII of Yirveyetre is a competent ruler with a dangerous passion for scheming. He has many enemies amongst his people and many well-paid friends as well. He is currently engaged in secret negotiation with one of the Wolf People clans. He hopes to ally himself with the Wolf People and then either declare Yirveyetre an independent nation with himself as king, or to march on Ragenegre and take the kingdom for himself. He has not decided what to do yet, and is still in the formulation stage of the plan. He leaves much of the day-to-day running of the Duchy to somewhat-trusted subordinates who often fall from favor when they start to think that they are important. All of this intrigue makes the Duke's court a dangerous place to live or work. The barons will often send trusted but very junior underlings to court if possible, unless they themselves enjoy Rojia's machinations. The Ducal residence is a awesome cut-stone edifice that was erected with the help of magic and stands four floors high with hollowed walls that allow soldiers to access the crenellated roof without passing through the Duke's residence.
Duke Reo ther North of Cita ther Fiume is a busy man. He is trying to increase the amount of revenue that the city makes from riverfront trade. He is trying to build up the wharf facilities and encourage outside investments in a large riverfront market. He is also worried about river pirates and the constant fighting is a drain on his manpower and coffers. He often makes the rounds of his spread out duchy with a large retinue of soldiers and his mage bodyguard, I Forike (The Thumb). It is said that he spends so much time away from home to avoid his wife. Many consider the Duchess Ajorthe a shrew and her name, which means “agreement”, is a great source of amusement.
Duchess
Thorke XII of Verona Acere is a very pleasant, intelligent woman.
She takes her duties seriously and acts in the best interests of her
people.
She also has a lot of trouble with bandits and Wolf People raiders.
The isolated nature of the Duchy is the cause of these troubles and she
is working hard to create a force of mounted archers to patrol the frontier
areas.
It is just starting to make some difference.
There is a lot of discussion about whom she will marry and the number of
suitors increases each year.
